I knitted this cozy winter set as a christmas gift and it was perfect for last-minute knitting. It just flew off the needles with the simple garter stitch pattern and big needles.
The special texture is achieved by combining two strands of fingering weight yarn with one strand of KidSilk lace yarn. Using green yarns in three different tones and three combinations creates the smooth color transition of the cowl.
I took notes while knitting, so here is some basic data for your own "grün, grün, grün" set.
YARNS:
any sock / fingering weight yarn in 2 matching colors + 1 skein Mohair Lace
OR
2 skeins WalkCollection Delight fingering 475m/100g 1x in LIME and 1 x in SULAWESI
1 skein WalkCollection KidSilk Lace 500m/50g in WHEATGRASS
col. A = 2 strands of LIME and 1 strand of WHEATGRASS held together
col. B = 1 strand of LIME, 1 strand of SULAWESI and 1 strand of WHEATGRASS held together
col. C = 2 strands of SULAWESI and 1 strand of WHEATGRASS held together
NEEDLE SIZE:
4mm, 6mm, 7mm circular needles or DPNs
STITCH PATTERN:
garter stich = knit stitches on right side and knit stitches on wrong side
for knitting in the round, place marker at beginning of round and knit first round and purl second round and repeat these 2 rows.
1 ridge = 2 rows
GAUGE:
Size is only important for hat. I never checked my gauge, but knitted the cowl first, pulled it over my head and then checked how many stitches less I would need for a snuggly hat. The stitch pattern is very stretchy and widens with wear so keep that in mind when measuring.
COWL:
finished measurements un-stretched: ca. 52cm wide / 27cm long
With color A and size 7mm needles CO 60 stitches and join for knitting in the round. Work in garter stitch for 12 ridges and then change to color B. Continue for 12 ridges before changing to color C. Knit 12 ridges and then bind off loosely. Weave in all loose ends.
HAT:
Before starting try on your cowl and see what width fits best around your head and count these stitches.
CO your determined no. of stitches (56 in my case) in col A on size 4mm needles (if your CO is very tight you might want to use 5mm needles) and join for knitting in the round. Knit 5 rides before changing to col C and size 7mm needles. Continue in garter stitch for 39 rows =19,5 ridges (or desired height) and start decreasing for crown in the purl stitch row. Place a marker after every 7th stitch and knit the 2 stitches before each marker together, repeat every second row. When you have only 8 stitches left cut the yarn and thread those live stitches onto the yarn and pull to close the gap. Weave in all loose ends.
FINGERLESS MITTS:
Using 6mm needles and col A CO 34 stitches by using the provisional CO method. Work in garter stitch for 21 ridges (or length that fits around your palm). These mitts are worked flat and then closed by sewing the live stitches of the last row to the live stitches of the provisional CO using the kitchener stitch. Don´t forget to leave a gap for your thumb. Weave in all loose ends.
Abbreviation: CO = Count On

Some more info:
I called this project "grün, ..." not only because it is green, but this is also the title of a German children song about colors in reference to workwear, which makes it easier for small children to memorize them. It starts off with green, as the color for huntsman, ... and children love to carry the song forward by adding all the colors they can think of. And so can you by choosing your favorite color for this project.
